以下是本书的 Review :The Apple Tree By John Galsworthy Reviewed by:Perry Shumway -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A possible plot for a potential LDS film:I am intrigued by the possibility of an LDS-related film which would be based loosely on John Galsworthy's somewhat maudlin The Apple Tree,presented in tandem with a young man's personal conflict over whether he should join the Church.In the story (if you haven't read it),the man looks back on a time in his life when he was young and in love with a simple farm girl.They were to be married,but when he left town for a few days to buy the girl a dress and to make other preparations,he was besieged by doubts and ultimately never returned to the town and never saw the girl again.Twenty-five years later,he reflects on his life and wonders how very different his life might have been had he followed though with his plan to marry the farm girl.I thought that this simple,sentimental (though somewhat negative) story would fit nicely into a film based on the experiences of a struggling convert.The farm girl could be a Mormon,and the young man could (while wooing the girl) investigate the Church and decide to be baptized before their wedding,with the promise to be temple-wed within a year.Thus,his ultimate rejection of the wedding would also mean a rejection of Church membership.His sad reflection,twenty-five years later,would lament his unhappiness both for not marrying the girl and for not joining the Church.The film could end on a positive note,with the man deciding (better late than never!) to contact the missionaries and start what he should have started twenty-five years before.Does this sound to any of you like it might be in any way interesting or worth pursuing?Might it be too sentimental/cliched/predictable/boring?By the way,if film can be considered literature,as I think it should,then LDS film is an integral component of Mormon letters,which means that I would not be off-topic or otherwise overstepping invisible boundaries by inviting anyone here who is interested in film to join another email list to which I belong,entitled LDS Film.It is a brand new Yahoo group,and members post anything and everything relating to movies having to do with the Church.To subscribe or just to read past posts,please visit the group's website at this address:http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ldsfilm/ .LDS film is big,and will soon be a lot bigger,I think.Please join our group!Thanks for listening to my ideas.- Perry Shumway,Soda Springs,Idaho 原文在这里,你可以在线或者复制下来阅读.http://www.fiction.us/galswo/apple/cover.html
