Zhouzhuang looks feels much like it did hundreds of years ago. It is crisscrossed by many ancient canals!For this reason, many visitors like to call Zhouzhuang a ‘Venice of the East’.
Naturally I began my Zhouzhuang experience with a boat ride. It was fun to explore the town while relaxing on a small boat! The boatman paddled down the canals past beautiful willow trees and underneath ancient stone bridges. As I drifted along, I could see people cooking lunch in their houses. Others were coming to the water to wash their rice, as their ancestors had done for centuries.
Next I took a walk around Zhouzhuang’s narrow lanes and alleys. As I strolled along, I admired the homes, restaurants and cozy(温暖舒适的) teahouse . Most buildings were decorated with carved wood. Each one seems to invite me to take a closer look. I also stopped in a few of the shops selling handmade crafts and charcoal(木炭) drawing. I ended up buying a drawing of Zhouzhuang’s famous Double Bridge.
On my second day, I visited Shen’s House, a huge Zhouzhuang home built in 1742. The Shens were wealthy landowners on their day. Being there made me feel closer to Chinese history and culture. I left the house and choose a place for dinner, a small waterside restaurant. The menu offered some of Zhouzhuang’s special dishes, including the famous Wansan pig’s leg. But I tried some local fish and vegetables instead.
I spent my last evening in Zhouzhuang walking the lanes once more. Colored lights from various shops reflected on the canals. The experience was perfectly serene. No neon(霓虹灯) signs or fluorescent lights(荧光灯) spoiled the view. No scooters(小型摩托车) or cars blocked my path as I strolled along. No Karaoke machines blasted their noise into the still night air.
In the middle of such a busy place like China, simple Zhouzhuang was a breath of fresh air.
