as是介词 你想到后面接doing这点很好 但是接doing的时候只是限于动词 as后面也可以接名词的啊 这里的“ordinary people”就是名词 ordinary（adj.）修饰people（n.）
至于为什么用lived 而不用living 这个和前面的painted有关 （时态一致）

For we students,这里并没有错 也可以用for us students.这个这个要是情况而定 你要看看这里的students是作为主语还是作为谓语使用,很明显 这里的students是主语 所以用we是没有错的,但是后面的concern about impending tuition hikes was even more acute than apprehension about final exams.应该改为concerning about impending tuition hikes was even more acuter than apprehension about final exams.在concern后面加上ing 做次句的主语,谓语则为was 不然若你用的是concern 那这个句子就有两个谓语了 与“一个英语句子只能有一个谓语”不符合了 concern变为concerning也是谓语变非谓语 避免了错误.

painted是用的是过去式as 引导的是定语从句scenes of life 是先行词，前后要一致，所以用lived

第二句，我觉得没错，看一下例句如：

另外concern作名词时是可数名词，动词的话要加ing

as后面可以跟名词，不一定都是动词进行时的。 lived和前面painted统一时态吧。
earlier 就已经表达是“早期”，times是不是多余了呢？
