Abstract
This paper wants to analyze labor income differentials between urban and rural regions in China in 1997.CHNS (China Economic,Population,Nutrition,and Health Survey—1997 Household Survey) data are used.Method of wage decomposition raised by Ronald Oaxaca (1973) is used and we also extend it to analyze labor time effects on labor income differentials.This paper finds that time can explain total labor income differentials by 18.67%.After excluding the effects of time,the author finds that individual characteristics (including gender,education,working experience,marriage status and health status) can explain difference between urban and rural unit hour earnings by 22.75%.The author thinks the remaining 77.43%,which cannot be explained by labor’s personal characteristics,is mainly due to rural-urban separation effects (including different acquisition of urban hukou and different distribution of occupation between urban and rural regions).In addition,the author also analyzes effects of living costs difference between urban and rural regions.
