In this study,the focal character is the founder or the members of the founding
team,which is in line with the growing recognition of the importance of top management,as well as entrepreneurial teams(Andersson,1990;McDougall,Oviatt and
Shrader,2003).Of the six companies covered,five were founded by a team of two or
more entrepreneurs.Education,previous industry,founding and international experience were among the characteristics that stood out as important to the founding of
the firms in this study.The importance of these characteristics as expressed by the
founders during the interviews support the resource based theory which acknowledges
that entrepreneurs have individual-specific resources that facilitate among others,assembling of resources for the new venture(McDougall and Oviatt,1994).Connections
and contacts were viewed as potential future contractors,service providers,and clients,
while one’s education,training and previous technical experience provided the expertise or capability required to develop the company’s initial and future products.As
reported in previous studies(e.g.Ibeh,2003;McDougall et al.,2003;Johnson 2004),
the characteristics that could be linked to the founding of an international new venture
are the founder’s overseas contacts,international experience and previous employment.Although McDougall et al.(2003)found it impossible to infer the causation
between international experience and international entry,in this study,this inference
is well supported by the remarks made by the founders themselves.Based on the interviews,it appears that the international experience of the founders concerned was
a source of prior knowledge that helped them identify foreign market opportunities,
which also gave them the confidence to exploit these opportunities.Somehow,the
founders’previous international experience compensated for the lack of experience
of the new venture as reported in other studies(e.g.Cooper and Dunkerberg,1986;
Kuemmerle,2002).These results support the general view that previous international
experience can lead to opportunity identification and market knowledge(McDougall
et al.,2003).
