Galvanized or epoxy-coated reinforcing bars are oftenspecified in order to minimize corrosion of reinforcement and consequentspalling of concrete under severe environmental conditions,such as in bridgedecks or parking garages subject to deicing chemicals,port and marine structures,and wastewater treatment plants.
ASTM A 767,“Standard specification for Zinc-Coated steelBars for concrete reinforcing,” includes requirements for the zinc coatingmaterial,the galvanizing process,the class or weight of coating ,finish andadherence of coating ,and the method of fabrication.Supplementary pertain tocoating of sheared ends and repair of damaged coating if bars are fabricatedafter galvanizing.
Epoxy-coated bars,presently more widely used than galvanizedbars,are governed by ASTM A 775,“standard specification for Epoxy-coatedreinforcing steel bars,” which includes requirements for the coating material,surface preparation prior to coating,method of application,and limits oncoating thickness ,and by ASTM A 934,”standard specification for Epoxy-coatedprefabricated steel reinforcing bars.” Cut ends and small spots of damaged coating is not damaged duringshipment and placing and that repairs are made if necessary.
