Is it the letter that you received yesterday------- makes you sad?请问一下为什么在横线上要填what 而不能用which?

咱们把这个疑问句改成陈述句容易看一点.也就是what makes you sad is the letter that you received yesterday.如果用which,则有选择的意思,就是说后面应该不止一个东西可能让你感到悲伤.而这里只有一样东西——letter,所以用what.

这是一个强调句：
it is ... that
把强调部分放到is和that之间，其它部分不变
陈述句： It is [the letter (I received yesterday)] that makes me sad.
正是昨天收到的那封信让我沮丧。
不强调的原句：The letter I recerved yeseterday makes me sad.
