为什么没有谓语?特殊疑问句的公式是特殊疑问词+一般疑问句.那就算去掉what 后面也够不成一般疑问句啊

1 这是特殊疑问句.有主语,有谓语,但省略了：What sort of places are they ? ------- are是系动词,they是主语

what are they sort of places？------ 这肯定是错句。what在这里只能修饰sort of places，所以是 what + sort of places.。what 做定语。

为什么what作定语？我不可以理解为they sort of places一起做主语吗？

如果what做表语，句子应该是：1 What are the sorts of places ? /// 2 What are they as sorts of places
1 非常自然
2 语法正确，但别扭不自然。
