Modern biotechnology has been playing a vital role in human daily life, as high and new technology develops in 21st century. It is the key point of its Downstream Processing technology to convert production into practice. Therefore, the Downstream Processing claims its prospect of a broad use, and thus we should learn about its various usages in human life and then undergo researches according to the practice. As a part of Bioengineering, Downstream Processing is also called Bioseparation. Bio-industrial products are obtained from fermentation, enzymatic reactions or/and cell culture of plants and/or animals. Downstream Processing is to separate and refine the media mentioned above to obtain the target products. This is constituted of some sets of Chemo-engineering units traditionally. However, it has been interacting with Bioengineering recently, for bio-materials have their special requirements according to their specific traits and some of the Chemo-engineering units are applied immaturely. Products of Downstream Processing are often occur in forms of dilute solutions as the restriction of oxygen transfer, inhabiting effect of mass of cells and products per se. It figures a complicated set of constituents,including macromolecules,micromolecules,soluble and insoluble substance and chemical additives. The products are liable to be degraded by chemical or microbial factors and thus lack stabilities. And the variability of it caused by the batch operation during culturing processings is huge. However, It has a higher demand of quality comparing with the products from chemo-engineering commonly, since they are mainly applied in food and medicines. This article makes an overall introduction about the role which Downstream Processing technology plays in human life, and point out the questions it brings about to human society and its promising future in the mean time.
