Test for interfiber bond using the internal bond tester
1.scope
this method determines the internat bonding strength of paper or paperboard by measuring the average energy,in thousands of a ft-1b,required to separate the specimen into two plies.
2.summary
A paper specimen bonded on both sides by a double sided adhesive paper tape is adhered to a right-angled metal test fixture,which is impacted paralld to the surface of paper by means of a penduium at about 90°from its release point.The impact results in delamination of the weaxest point of the assemblage-namely the paper,between the lower and upper sufaces.The pointer of the tester indicates the energy required to rupture,in thousandths of a ft-1b of force.
3.apparatus
Internal bond tester ,consisting of:
3.11 A stationary anvil and separable platen which the pendulum strikes at the same point for each test.
3.12 A pendulum of dual capacity 0-0.250 and 0.100-0.500ft-1b,and free to swing on ball bearing or similar low friction type bearing.The range changing weights must be placed so as not to after the center of gravity of the pendulum.
3.13 A means of holding the pendulum in a raised position with provision for instancous release.
3.14 A means of registering the ma cimum are through which the pendulum swings when released
3.15 A seale calibrated in thousandths of a ft-1b on both ranges,with a reternce point for calibrating the pointer in freeswing to compensate for friction and windage.
3.16 A multiple specimen preparation station,which will allow for variations of specimen thicknesses,with optionat clamping pressures on the specimen from 50 to 200 psi in 50 psi inerements.
4.test specimens
4.1 Obtain a representative sample in accordance with T 400.
4.2 Accountely cut specimens for the test,1 in wide and 5 or more in long.Handle the specimens by edges only.Condition them in accordance with T 402 before inserting into the specimen prenaration station .
5.procedure
5.1 Level the instrument until the bubble of the intergral spicit level is centered .The pendulum will then hang vertically.coinciding with the vertical zero mark on the dial .Calibrate the instrument before starting a series of test .Recalibrate it whenever the pendulum range weights are changesd.
5.2 Load the tape dispenser with 36-yd roll to 1-in.double-faced perssure sensitive tape.Scotion Brand 400 or equibalent.
5.3 Select and set into pesition the desired pressure spacers in the bores of the specimen preparation station fuse least pressure possible without peeling from angle or anside.(See Note2)
5.4 Lay the bottom steel anvils in then respective positions on the locating pins.
