应该填“being”.
despite后面应该接一个名词性短语,所以空格处不应该出现谓语成分,只能用非谓语成分来修饰,所以用being使句子意思通顺.
本题nowhere near是“离.很远”的意思,前面出现的代词its在逻辑上指代的是后面出现的Morakot ( the typhoon),意思是“莫拉克台风的中心”.
本文可以译为“尽管莫拉克台风的中心离这个岛屿很远,它还是因导致25人死亡而受到大家的谴责.”
但本题中death应该用复数deaths.
